My wife and I suffer from bad backs and have been having a lot of problem maintaining our carpeted floors. When I read in Consumer Reports about this vacumn cleaner, I was excited to try it out. Ordering from Amazon was quick and easy. The vacumn is a dream. You can control this lightweight with one finger because it feels like it is almost self driven and it will suck up everything that gets close. Amazingly strong. The only drawback so far has been the hose which is a little short, but the other features more than make up for this one drawback. I highly recommend the product and at the price it's a super bargain.

Wow, a great little sucker!
This hoover is truly impressive. I blew up my previous (and MUCH more expensive) hoover when I moved into my new home and had 3 shedding cats, a house full of shedding carpet and myself shedding long blonde hair. This vacuum has dealt with all of the above and not even slowed down. I've got to say this vacuum is terrific, much more impressive than one might imagine with it's economical price tag. I recommend it highly, if it can take my abuse it can take anything!

Got a brain storm in part because I couldn't figure out a functional way to keep the litter box area clean. The bigger heavier $300.00 unit is always upstairs plus, it's the "good vacume". The litter box area downstairs is always dirty extra litter comming off of little feet, you get the drill.

My new lightweight Hoover does the job in a snap not to mention I can vacume the rest of the spiders up and anything else whenever I want. Plus I can very easily pull out the wand for edges or anything else. The basement has never been so clean. I choose the bagged type purposely over the baggless because of the dust in the litter, clogging up the bagless filter could get costly. The paper bags are dirt:) cheap. So if I get a year or two or three out of this machine no problems I'll just buy another.

In conclusion, vacumes are so in expensive now days, if it would be nice to have one in some other area just to keep there, get one! From Amazon of course. Best price. Free shipping. No tax. Why wait!

Splendid and amusing
We are amused! The Roomba 530 really works, although not as fast as you could do the job with a standard vac. The beauty, of course, is that you don't do the work, it does. It cleaned the home office perfectly, in about 30 minutes. Using the virtual walls, it has been assigned the job of cleaning a large Oriental rug, and it does not get hung up on the fringe. It is an amazing thing to watch, much stronger than you might think. Several other reviewers mentioned that after a couple of weeks, they could see that their house was much cleaner, with less dust. I already can tell that that will happen here. Since I work at home, I can turn it on every day and let it work on a specific room. It is astonishing how much dog hair and powdery dirt it vacuums up. In the first hour I emptied the dirt bins twice, so it is definitely doing its job. I bought it after reading the most lengthy reviews here -- those were very helpful. My purchase was mid-Sept. '08, and there was a free extra of a set of replacement attachments. If you can get in on that deal, I recommend it. Besides the extra brushes and filters, the box includes another virtual wall, so you can define work areas and let the little beast loose. The 530 comes with two virtual walls, so with the extra, you can cordon off areas very well. I didnt know it automatically took itself home, but it seems that when it gets full, or runs low on energy, it does take itself back to its Dock, parks, and shuts down for a recharge. Really, it's like having R2D2's cousin in the house. The 530 seems like a good model to start with, and is less expensive than the programmable ones, especially with the free set of replacement parts.

UPDATE: Another good thing about Roombas is that the vacuuming action isnt as harsh as a regular vacuum cleaner, so if you have old & venerable Oriental, silk, or Persian carpets, this is a much, much better way to clean them because it is so much more gentle.

Works fine for what it is
Own 535 model for about a week. Use it every day. Works great so far.
I currently live in a carpeted 3br alone, being out to work 12 hours a day, so this thing is absolutely invaluable for me. I've read all the negative reviews, then bought it. $212.42 at hsn.com, + $34.95 2yr warranty (I guess you'd want it too). No illusions, prepared to spend some money for spare parts in (near?) future. Reviews are discrepant about the iRobot customer service, from "excellent" to "it sucks". I somehow more inclined to believe in the latter, but we'll see.
The thing is FUN to watch (and show to a guest ;o), but it does really good job too, judging from the amount of dust it gathers every time. Of course, have to spend 2 minutes cleaning it after every 2-hour working cycle, which is fair enough, if you ask me. Cut hair from the brushes with scissors. Remove all chairs, shoes, etc, from the room, place the base there, shut the door, then leave for a day. At night, find the room (supposedly) clean, and Roomba charging itself at the base. Cool!
Had to adjust the height of a sofa to let it under. 10 minutes of hard work, but I am a man in the house, am I not? (Remember, no illusions! It's NOT your regular vacuum..).
Have not used the lighthouse yet, the instruction is a mess, bought D-size batteries, but they do not fit, need C-size. But (!!) I found that closed doors work perfectly as well! Otherwise, it works too, but sometimes has trouble returning to the base from another room. Not really a problem, just works till the battery dies, then has to be charged for a few extra hours.
One of my rooms is a loft, and the robot feels pretty comfortable there, has not fallen from the stairs so far. Runs at full speed towards the abyss, then somehow manages to stop on the brink every time. Could not believe it at first, stayed "on belay" for a half an hour, but now feel comfortable leaving it working upstairs unattended (we'll see ;).
For a computer guy, it is really interesting to guess its algorithm from its behavior. My best guess it is completely randomized, with ~60% chance to go at a sharp (~15-20 degrees) angle after hitting an obstacle, and the rest is showing a "smart" behavior following a wall. Resulting in some room areas covered obviously better than others. iRobot says everybody's welcome to play with its programming through some open (?) API, but I did not investigate it yet. Depending on its computational power, it might be possible to apply some state-of-the-art AI algorithms to improve it. At least, make it remember the room configuration...

Junky piece of plastic!
I was so excited to get this vacuum and now I am so disappointed in the product! After only 4 uses, a piece of the handle that holds the hose attachment in place has broken off and now the vacuum cannot be pushed in the upright position. The bulkiness and weight of the vacuum made it tough to handle in the first place, but now it is almost impossible to push it around the room and it is impossible to pull it towards you, without it falling apart! I am totally disappointed in this product. Save your money and buy something else.

Nice engineering, average performance
I just returned a Dyson DC14 Animal to Costco because I was unimpressed with certain aspects of the vacuum. First, it picked up slightly less stuff than my old HEPA bagless Dirt Devil that cost me $150. I found the long hard extension wand to be too long and clumsy to use and the 17 foot reach advertised is very dependant on the length of said wand. It was extremely hard to push at times depending on the carpet fiber density. The beater bar clutch system is extremely annoying; I transitioned from standard pile carpet to an inexpensive oriental style throw rug and the beater bar clutch disengaged the bar with a very very loud ratcheting noise. When I disengaged the beater bar manually, the machine is very hard to push. My old vacuum would just navigate over both surfaces without a fuss and was much easier to push. When I took the canister apart, I could see where the small holes in it could clog easily as others have noted. I did not think this machine, while very well engineered in many respects, was worth $400+ dollars.

I love it...
Lets just say I didn't realize how gross my floors were. I have 3 dogs and I had to empty this canister 8 times, yes 8 the first time I used it. I had to take out the trash when I was done. My house is small, it took me an hour to vacuum. With my old vacuum I thought the normal 15 min. was sufficient. Boy was I wrong, I couldn't believe how much stuff was in there and it is sooo easy to empty. I would recommend this to everyone. Especially if you get it for a decent price. I've used it 4 times total at once a week so far and even had to empty the canister like about 3-4 times each use (I do have 3 dogs). Needless to say I am pleased with the suction, we have old carpet and I sometimes think my dyson is going to eat it! :) Hope you buy one, it's awesome.

Awesome product. Before buying this vacuum I was using a Kirby which I paid a lot of money for but this vacuum I think is much better. It is evident buy the dirt and dog hair that it is picking up. I am still amazed at how much it gets out of the carpet. It is very easy to use. I like how quickly you can switch from a traditional vacuum to using the wand to get things.

Why pay full price??
I purchased the Dyson Absolute Animal (DC17) vacuum with a little hesitation being that it was a remanufactured product. It arrived in a plain cardboard box with no pictures and was lacking instructions on how to assemble and use it, however, the vacuum appeared to be in brand new condition. I found the Dyson website very helpful for the less intuitive aspects of assembly and use. I currently share an apartment with 4 cats and my old vacuum left a lot of pet hair behind. I was looking for a superior product and I found it in the Dyson Animal! I was shocked at how quickly the clear bin filled up with hair. It is easy to use and very well designed. It is a bit cumbersome to use on stairs, but the attachment tools work well. This vacuum picked up so much dirt and hair from my beige carpets, it looks like I just had them shampooed! I actually enjoy vacuuming now! Why pay full price?? I saved over 200$ on my remanufactured Dyson and couldn't be happier with my purchase! I can't help but smile smugly when I walk past the same model listed at full price in my local stores!

Great vacuum, a bit bulky
After having the Kirby lady over at our house we were convinced that our current vacuum was not doing the job it should have been. We obviously did not want to spend $1000 on a dirt sucker, so we started looking around. The remanufactured Dysons at Amazon seemed to be a good deal, and since we have a dog we picked the DC17 Animal model.

The setup of the unit is very straightforward and tool storage seems to function well. The suction on this thing is what they advertise, and what really works. This vacuum certainly picks up dirt and dog hair very well. The only complaint that I have is that it is a bit bulky, and as others have mentioned, doesn't fit well under furniture.

Overall I give the product four stars. The fifth would have come if it were a bit lower profile and actually fit under my furniture.

Easy and it works!
What an improvement over other Bissell items (Little Green machine, etc.). I vowed I'd never get another Bissell but after reading the reviews, I risked it and I;m glad I did! I followed the "put your cleaner in a spray bottle with some water and spray the area, then clean with the machine and plain water" and it worked very well. For an old, stubborn "I've tried everything including the big machine" stain, I squirted the OxyGen straight on it, rubbed it into the carpet fibers with my fingertips a little, waited for 5 minutes and then cleaned it with the machine and plain water. GONE!!

The best machine ever!
I bought this item at sears to clean up my couch before Thanksgiving. I was going to spend $150 for a professional cleaning service but started running out of time. I saw it in the store and picked it up. I have 4 cats and 2 dogs so the couch sees a lot of traffic and messes. Not to mention the red wine I spilled 1 year ago.
I have washed the cushion cover multiple times with no luck, the stain was always left behind.
I brought the spot bot home, set the cushion on the floor with the spot bot on top and set it to the set in stain procedure. after 10 minutes the stain was gone. I'm seriously thinking this machine is magic! The best investment ever. I wish I hadn't thrown out my stained area rug 4 months ago!

After reading the reviews about the circular spot area left behind, I was a bit gun shy to use the product but the results are so impressive that I have to share my experience with others. I call the carpet cleaning service every six months, at least, to clean our stairs and one "choice" spot in particular. I purchased the spot bot to treat this area and it worked like a charm. It was amazing how quickly it removed something which seemed to be permanent within a short 6 minutes. I used the hand held wand with equal success. I quickly recommend this product to others with similar maladies....its just plain great.

No idea how dirty my carpets were until this
I honestly thought my old vacuum was doing the job...until it died and I immediately (off of friend's recommendation) purchased the Dyson DC07. I could not believe how much this vacuum picked up, even after I had vacuumed the day before with my old GE.

Proof is definitely in the brush. I have to cut off my long hair and the cat hair that gets wound around the brush. I have to do this about 2 times a month. This puppy really gets the gunk. I have 3 small kids, 1 cat, and about 1900 square feet they run around and this thing is amazing thus far. I've had it 4 months. I'd highly recommend it.

Great Vacuum
I do wish that I had bought this long ago! It is worth the money. It is easy to use! I would suggest this for anyone with animals!

Best Vaccum, Hands Down
I thought it might be handy for those considering this Dyson (or any other Dyson for that matter), to read a review from a longtime owner. I purchased this model in May 2004 after yet another in a long string of vacuums decided to die on me. The price was a little daunting, but ultimately well worth it. What I've learned in my four years of owning a DC07 is this:

1) Just like Mr. Dyson proclaims on his commercials, it NEVER loses suction. Ever. All you need to do is empty the canister when it's full (push a button, carry the released canister to the nearest trashcan and pull a trigger), and clean out the little filter sponge every six months as directed in the user manual. Other than tiny bit of maintenance, this beast will suck up every unwanted item on your carpets and hardwood. I know I've read some users saying it doesn't work well on non-carpeted surfaces, but my house is mostly hardwood (and some icky, ancient Formica), and I've yet to have a problem--and I'm one of those neurotic tri-weekly vacuuming types who can't stand to see a fleck of lint on the floor.

2) It can take a beating. Now, I'm not saying you should chuck the thing down the stairs to see if it bounces, but if you vacuum the way I do, then furniture, walls and all sorts of other things get slammed into on a regular basis. Not to worry; this vacuum can handle it. Mine has a few scuffs here and there, but no broken parts in the four years I've regularly used/abused it.

3) Cat hair has no chance--that is, with the regular vacuum part. The "Animal" attachment is less than useful and I've given up on messing with it; the little brushes inside spin and spin, and do nothing at all. It's the biggest drawback of this vacuum: not being able to use the extension on furniture. But honestly, I've come to realize lifting up the vacuum and going over the sofa not only works just as well, I've also gained some nice guns out of the deal.

4) Cleaning out jams in the brush (and you'll know if you've got one because the machine makes a horrific racket to alert you) and in the unit itself is very easy. All areas in which something could be hiding are accessible by levers and buttons that allow you to snap off the various components to locate the clog. No screwdrivers or rocket scientists necessary.

5) The telescoping wand is a little strange, as it both is and is inside the handle mechanism. To use it at its full length you have to fully remove it from the extension tube and then flip it around and snap the other end of it in place instead of being able to just fully extend the wand right where it is. I'm completely used to it now, but new users will wonder what the heck Mr. Dyson was thinking (and constantly worry about the chance of lamp damage from swinging the thing around like a majorette in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade). This design flaw has been fixed with subsequent models, I believe.

So, that's it. Aside from an odd color choice (purple? really?), the non-functional animal hair attachment and the weird way the wand extends, I'm in love. This machine has outlasted and outperformed every vacuum I've ever had. I'll never buy anything but a Dyson ever again.

I love this little robot!!
I have a dog and the floor needs to be cleaned around twice a week, this robot has helped me out so much. At first i went out and bought a HEPA canister vac which does a great job, but because of the hassle i only used it once a week. The trick for improving my situation was to do a good job cleaning twice-three times a week(roomba), rather than a great job cleaning once a week (canister vac). After doing this i noticed that there was a lot less dust around the house and on the electronics.

Roomba is imperfect it doesn't do everything and it takes some effort on my part to help it clean efficiently and to maintain it, but it really makes life easier.

Ruined my floor and then had terrible customer support
I had a Roomba 560 for about 5 months At first I loved it, but then I came home one day to find it dead in the middle of my floor - and on top of a deep circular groove it had carved in my brand new hardwood. Obviously, I was upset.

When I first called iRobot tech support, they said they'd refund it and pay to repair the floor. That made sense, and although I would have preferred to just not ruin the floor, it seemed fair.

Well, two months later - I've paid $450 to repair the groove, submitted all sorts of paperwork (photos, receipts, etc), and emailed and called tech support over a dozen times, and - still no refund or repair payment. They did offer to send me a new robot. But of course, I can't risk that it will do the same thing again.

It was great at first, but since then, it not only caused major damage, I've been exposed to iRobot tech support which has to be about the worst customer experience I've had at any company ever.

There's ALOT to love about the New Roomba 560 model. It has a lcd clock near the clean button where you can actually set the date/time you would like for the roomba to start cleaning without you having to do anything but create a scheduled time prior to cleaning. The battery life seems to last very well until it needs recharging.

The Roomba I had prior to the new 560 was the white one, the Discovery. (the battery since has failed twice on that one and the actually power cord according to iRobot needs replacing as well) I do though have to give credit for the Discovery Roomba as it was able to go onto my rugs with no problems and continue cycling cleaning. The new 560 Model will NOT do this. Even if you pick it up and press the clean button when you already have it on the rug it wont go far until it stops and beeps at you telling you its time to change the filter or something of that nature.

So all in all I rate the 560 model with 4 out of 5 stars because i'm unable to clean my whole house using the roomba 560.

I bought the Fein to replace an old Craftsman shop-vac that was as loud as the deck of an aircraft carrier. Instant improvement, with the first discovery being that you will actually use a vac all the time if it's not too loud! The Fein has several endearing features: it's light, it's quiet, it's relatively hard to tip over, it has a long cord, and the cord stores on the body (by wrapping it around the top groove). I don't understand some reviewers' comments on the strength of the suction. These vacs do not have anything close to the level of suction developed by the cheaper and louder vacs. In fact, if they did, they would be a lot harder to use attached to tools like sanders. There is plenty of suction for any reasonable use, though.

I've never bought the wet-vac parts for the Fein and never used the vac with a bag. I just dump out the contents into a trash bag. Moreover, I've never replaced the filter and am careful when cleaning it - I don't over-clean the filter, and I'm careful not to damage it. A well-used filter with a reasonable amount of filter cake built up on it is very efficient, typically yielding much better filtration than the nominal micron rating listed. Among other things, I find I can use mine for drywall and for cleaning out my pellet stove without dust or soot escaping from the vac, though I'd buy a purpose-built vac if those were my primary uses. (Don't try this with a new filter!)

I agree with other reviewers' comments on the hose and attachment parts. They are lightweight and shouldn't be abused.

The bottom line on my review goes back to the starting comment. I found that quiet overwhelms every other consideration. Having a quiet vac turns it into something you use as you work instead of an end-of-day chore.

Don't be oversold on the hyped superiority of Festool vacs for their tools. While they are excellent vacs (I own one in addition to a Fein Turbo II) with tons of features, strictly from a vacuuming standpoint they don't offer any better performance than the Fein - and that includes any supposed advantage of the Festool vac's variable speed.

The one use for which I prefer the Festool vac is for sanding. But that's because I have a Festool vac with a HEPA filter, and I do not have the HEPA filter for my Fein. There is also one really good reason to prefer the Fein vac over Festool, and that's the exorbitant cost of Festool bags! Unlike sanding dust, chips from a tool like the Festool Domino will fill a bag in a hurry. Do yourself a favor and attach the Domino to your Fein instead!

The Fein stepped rubber adapter can be trimmed to fit any Festool power tool and will store nicely in the Systainer. It is as flexible as the end of the Festool hose, so will adapt to either the round or oval dust outlets on Festool tools. You can get the adapter from Amazon or from Woodcraft.

The vacuum is powerful and compact. I felt ripped off when the price ended up not including the hoses and attachments. I had to spend an extra $150 or there abouts for the extras.

Quality product
I bought this vac for drywall dust for a large project. I used it with the HEPA filter. After filling up a few bags with drywall dust the vacuum gave up and made a ton of noise. I got it serviced for free under warranty. I did not replace the HEPA filter after each bag change which was a mistake. I recommend that users replace the filter after every bag change if you're using it for drywall dust. I switched to the 1 micron filters for this purpose and have found that they work great, even for drywall dust. Hope this is helpful.

Lovin' my new Vacuum
I love my new vacuum. It is so quiet and has great suction! It glides over my hardwood floors and so easy to switch to carpet. It gets under all my very low furniture and the retractable cord is so handy. I highly recommend this vacuum. Buy with confidence.

bagless upright convert here. i purchased this can-vac as refurbished ($170) back in dec05. no problems at all, and i still LOVE using it. my apartments have become smaller and smaller, yet there's always a suitable storage spot for it. nothing has broken/nothing is "flimsy."

suction: decreases every time the bag is near full. i completely forget to change the bag; increase the suction and this puppy just keeps on taking it.

PROS:
- powerhouse
- QUIET! (i was amazed at how quiet this is; i often vac late in the evening and the wheels are quiet, too.)
- light weight (yes, when compared to all the past uprights i owned)
- convenient attachments holder
- long retractable cord (always wanted this feature)
- tiny disposable bag with closure (love this, too!), so everything stays clean

CONS: *none*, but
- i thought the color i was getting was more orange - current pic is somewhat accurate - paprika, not chili powder.
- i would have liked power controls on the wand as well as a light at the head, but that would have made the can-vac bulkier to store and heavier. would have cost more, too.)

* when i received my can-vac, the user guide noted complimentary (free) bags. these were not included. i promptly called electrolux about this and i received my bags about 3 days later. all it takes is a phone call, so stop complaining and do something already. *

pay attention, people - this is not the same electrolux company. i won't go into details since you can google it.

**i would highly recommend this can-vac to anyone and i will buy it again should my current can-vac die. next model up is sold at bj's if you need it in a hurry, and i think lowe's has it because that's where i go (once a year - no pets) to get bags.

Buy this vacuum
If you're looking for a multi purpose vacuum cleaner your search is over. The only thing which could possibly do a better job of eliminating dust and allergens in the household is a whole house vacuum which exhausts to the outside. I've now purchased two Ovygen2 vacuums for two houses. Stop looking. Buy this vacuum. (Unless of course you're considering installing a whole house vacuum) The subscription service for bags and filters on the Electrolux site is nice too.

Nice Vacuum
Nice vacuum. I have not had it very long but so far so good. I do wish it was one of the bagless type but of course that would make it less convenient. Have had electrolux before and they are pretty sturdy and will go the distance. Picks up cat hair quite well!

WOW am I glad I bought this appliance!
This is a great great vacuum cleaner. I am so glad I bought it. I have 2 hairy hairy dogs in my carpeted bedroom and the power head sucks up all their hair without a hitch. They also have a dog door into the bedroom which brings in dust, etc so the carpet is gettin heavy use AND, the rest of my house is hard wood floors and I can switch over in a second and keep on going. I love that the controls are in the handle, so I can turn it on and off without having to bend over and find a button on the canister. A really great thing, is when you change the vacuum cleaner bag, it has this little panel that slides over the opening so none of the dust can escape. Highly Highly recommend.
